Yeah, I had that problem. zenphoto uses flowplayer, but I think the problem would exist in any flash-based video player. Basically, it would need to download the whole .mp4 file before starting to play – defeating the whole idea of ’streaming’

Apparently, I’m not alone with this problem. And, as often is the case, someone else on the internet has solved it admirably with MetaDataMover.

Doesn’t your mp4 file stream properly over the Internet? Does the mp4 need to download completely before playing in a Flash player? rndware’s Metadata Mover moves metadata from the end to the beginning of mp4 files. This allows any mp4 file to be streamed using Flash players, without needing to load the entire movie.

I’m just puzzled why this tool needs administrator access. Hope I haven’t installed a trojan…

So I recently picked up a Canon Vixia HF-200 from Mostly Digital. Nice HD Camcorder… love it (besides the fact that the battery that comes with it is underpowered – I bought a heftier one from a no-name Chinese manufacturer that keeps it recording for a while)

I had an issue though editing the HD video. Yes, it comes with some software, which is terrible. Also, my old Athlon dual-core processor couldn’t handle the H264 AVCHD… would stutter while previewing with both cores at 100%. Even my Toshiba laptop couldn’t deal with it. (Both with the included software, and my own editor of choice, Adobe Premiere Elements).

So I figured I needed a new machine (Core i7 920 biatch! With a GTX 295. Obviously for… ‘video editing’. Not ‘video gaming’. :P)

Problem is, I got it with Windows 7, and wouldn’t you know it, Premiere Elements is a major crashfest. Even the newer version 8 closes unceremoniously whenever I try, oh, add transitions or effects.

So I played around with a few different editors, finally settling on Cyberlink PowerDirector. Works smoothly, and no crashage!! Yay!

The results of my splicing are in the gallery!

I use Zenphoto for my gallery, which uses the Flowplayer plugin (as one option) for playing videos (flv & mp4).

I just noticed this, but the out-of-the box settings for the above do not preserve the aspect ratio of videos (i.e. they are stretched to fit the player, or the screen in full screen mode). And there is no option to change this setting in zenphoto. (They have a dropdown for the aspect ratio of the THUMBNAIL – how useless is that?). So I did some hacking of the code, and now it works great!

So I edited the zp-core/plugins/flowplayer3.php file. There are three spots where this code appears (a few if…else blocks that depend on such things as the presence of a .jpg thumbnail for example):

{
url:"' . $moviepath . '",
autoPlay: '.$autoplay.',
autoBuffering: true,
}

I edited them all to read:

{
url:"' . $moviepath . '",
autoPlay: '.$autoplay.',
autoBuffering: true,
scaling: "orig"
}

Presto, all done.

It’s ugly, and the more elegant way would be to make a new option in the plugin settings to set this to a user-defined value… but that’s the developer’s job, not mine! :P

I was having a little issue with Premiere Elements; namely, that when I tried to create a new project, it would not let me “Change Settings” – I clicked on the button, and the dialog that came up was empty, and all the buttons were blank.

This wasn’t an issue before, but I have some videos of my son taken by my brother-in-law’s camcorder, which records in HD. So, I need an HD profile…

The solution is posted here in the Adobe forums:

Download the official tryout version from Adobe.com (670MB).

Run the “.exe” file to extract the files from the “.7z” archive. You do not need to proceed with the install of the trial versions.

Find a file called “Settings.zip” in the extracted “CoreTemplates” folder.

Unzip this “Settings.zip” file (preserving the folder structure) into:

Vista x64: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0\settings

Vista x86: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0\settings

You should end up with a load of de_DE, en_US, etc folders within the “Settings” folder.

When you next start Premeiere Elements, you should have a full set of presets available. If you do not, change the capitalisation of “Settings” folder. Mine works with a lower case “s” but some have reported that they needed a capital “S”

For those who don’t feel like downloading a 600+ MB file (and registering at adobe – ick), here’s the missing file: settings.zip
