More furnace issues

January 18, 2009 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

You may remember I had a little furnace problem with the flame sensor a while ago (was that 3 months ago already)? Over the last few weeks I’ve had a new problem – instead of the furnace turning off mere seconds after the burners lit (that problem was a failure in the flame sensor), this time my furnace would turn on, and then shut off after about 30 seconds. When the blower fan turned on, I thought I heard water sloshing around in there.

cdd6_2Consulting with my father-in-law, who knows a lot about these things, I learned that clogged condensate drainage is a big problem with a lot of these furnaces. I searched through the maze of tubing and found my problem with the condensate trap – it was clogged. I cleaned it out, but I’ve had to do that a few times now and a few days after cleaning, it’s clogged again.

I’m going to try ordering a replacement (this ebay store looked great for this!) and see if that solves the problem!

Furnace turning itself off…

October 08, 2008 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

So I was wondering why my house seemed a bit cold this evening… further investigation revealed my natural gas furnace was lighting (blower turning on, igniter lighting up, really cool blue gas flames spewing forth…), but mere seconds after the pyrotechnics began, it shut itself off.

Needless to say, that wasn’t warming up the house.

Thank you google and ‘Oscar’ for the solution to the furnace flame going out problem:

Question
we have a janitrol gmp075-3 natural gas furnace. Every year we have a problem this year our HSI went bad. our current problem is, when the furnace first turns on, the ignitor turns on, the flame is then produced about five seconds later the flame turns off and the blower starts to run only producing cold air. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on having a technician come in and fixing the problem. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it thanks.

Answer
Nick,
Clean the flame sensor , should be located just to the left of the HSI in front of the last burner, single wire going to it, porcelain base and about 1/8th” rod. remove it and use some steel wool or fine emery cloth to clean it, reinstall and try the furnace. Let me know.

Landscaping pt 2

September 22, 2008 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

*phew* that was a tiring weekend! But with my father-in-law’s help, we finished the first bit of landscaping, a little stone border around our walkway and a low retaining wall around the front of the house, and some square borders around the trees on my lot. The house really looks much nicer now!
I’ll put up some pictures in the gallery when I get home tonight!

Other than that, today I’m locuming for an MD I work with in Brampton… my first day as a fully independent MD, how about that? … Well it’s a group practice so help is just down the hall if I need it, but so far, so good!

Landscaping, argh!

September 19, 2008 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

There’s my ARGH for talk like a pirate day. :)

What have I been up to lately? Not much, besides my crazy residency schedule. Running around between Brampton, Kitchener, and Hamilton is taking its toll. I’m almost done my OB rotation in Brampton – what an experience! I have nearly 200 deliveries under my belt now, and I’m not even working yet! :)

My wife and I have been trying to get the landscaping of our house rolling – we picked up some shrubs and things on sale. There’s a bit of a border we want to install around our walkway; I have to dig up some of the grass there… and we’re thinking about putting a retaining wall around the front part of our house. But that may have to wait until next year… and I’m not too sure what to do about the dying tree we have (but I think it’s actually a city tree, it’s not actually on our property…)

Ah, the joys of being a homeowner!

This looks so cool. I need some time away from work (and wrapping up the legal bits of our home purchase) to try it though. (via BoingBoing)

Oh, yes, the wife and I bought a house. Crazy, eh? :) More updates another time…
