Miscellaneous notes of interest

  • Here’s an xkcd comic my wife could agree with (I’m sure she’d love to erase my computer… :P ) :Fight - XKCD
  • Why does a Salad cost more than a big Mac? This graph of agricultural subsidies compared with recommended dietary intakes is illuminating. This is for the US, and I don’t know how Canadian numbers compare… (via over my med body!)

  • Panda is still in top form with his latest post putting CAM proponents in their place:

You, oh purveyor of snake oil, may exhaust yourself pointing out the flaws in medical science. You may grimly list the horrific side effects of many of our therapies and gleefully highlight the lack of evidence for quite a few things done in the real medical world. You may even solemnly condemn our general inability to really cure much of anything but, apart from making yourself really tired and giving me a crick in my neck from nodding in agreement, all you will have demonstrated is that real medicine is an imperfect business which is not a huge revelation to anyone who has spent more than an hour in a nursing home, a hospital, or any other place where you can find incredibly sick people who, despite our best efforts, often remain incredibly sick and die after being flogged by the mightest weapons in the medical armatorium. A darn shame but it does not follow that the solution to our limited medical knowledge is pixie dust, magical gnomes, or spiritual energy streaming from your fingertips.

Of Weddings and mullberries

June 28, 2005 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

Well, this past weekend I went to the second wedding I’ve ever been to. I suppose it’s the third, although my aunt’s wedding (which I attended when I was about 6 years old) I really can’t remember at all, so it doesn’t count.

The wedding was for my girlfriend’s friend Roseanna, and the GF was a bridesmaid. So, in keeping with my previous record, I’ve picked up a bridesmaid (well, sortof…) at each wedding I was at. lol.

Wal-Mart Shopping

August 28, 2004 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

I was doing some errands at Wal-Mart today (seems nobody else around here does things like shop for lightbulbs and a new shower curtian, though our kitchen was darker than a prehistoric cave and our bathroom filthy…). I saw this family and they were speaking Hungarian. Which isn’t really all that uncommon here, mind you… but it was just cute hearing little kids speaking it. I guess it’s ’cause I haven’t been to Hungary since I was little myself.

Speaking of which… I really really want to go back to this one Hungarian restaurant. I really liked it… tasted like Mom’s cooking. I’ll take my girlfriend one of these days I think. ;)

Day’s Events

May 28, 2004 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

I went and picked up a laptop today. Always wanted one of those. Will need it to go to Thunder Bay, as well. I’m not shipping my PC out there again… cost me a pretty penny and they busted it on the way back, too. Now all I need to do is order a PDA (I’m getting a Sony CLIE TJ37… 99% certain of it…) and I’m all set!

Oh, in less cheery news, I had a bit of a shock today. I went to pay for some groceries and was told the $10 bill I had was a fake. Upon close inspection, it is. The only thing wrong with it I can detect is it’s missing the little bumps in braille to show the value of the bill. Apparently the colour is slightly off too, but you’d have to stare at it beside a real bill to tell.

Unfortunately I don’t remember where I got it from to complain about. It’s exam week I lived on fast food for the last 5 days, so it could’ve come from anywhere.

I guess it’ll teach me to ask for receits for everything, I probably didn’t get too many 10s in change… but I have no record so… *shrug*. I’m out $10.

Well, I still have the bill and could try using it somewhere else… but that’d be illegal. :P

Sweet! Canned food!

April 19, 2003 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

Hehe… nice!! I was looking through my cupboards and I found canned Beef Stew. Mmmm…. well, not really.

Geez, I must still be sick if I’m this excited over some plain canned good.
