Smile (1998)

This poem was written for someone particularly special to me… my (now longtime ex) girlfriend. I really like this one, personally. The strength of the human spirit and all that.

I hope you like it too. I hope you like all of my stuff, actually, but, this one in particular.

Or at least, pretend you do. :)

(Oh forget it, just write whatever you want in the comments about my amateur mixing of words…)

Smile,
for your joy banishes whatever clouds
may hang over the hills and valleys of life.Care not for the fiercest of storms,
though they howl about your ears,
whispering of despair,
seizing twigs and leaves into a swirling dance,
Whipping, twisting, screaming around you.

Care not for the torrents of rain
that send shivers along your limbs,
leeching the heat from your skin,
and send rivers and lakes flooding,
throwing danger across your path.

Care not, for even the terrible elements
have no sway over what you hold within.
Snow and ice may freeze the ground,
but melt before your smile;
end even in the depths of the bleakest blizzard,
your laughter banishes its fury,
diminishes its bite,
and calls the sun from behind gray clouds,
to fill the world with your beautiful light.
