For Andrea (1998)

This poem has an interesting history. Yet another one of those I wrote while “on the job” at the YMCA. Inspired by a lovely co-worker… I gave her a copy (with the appropriate assurances that it was not intended as anything other than a compliment) and she seemed to really like it. Then I heard that her boyfriend got jealous, and at his request she wouldn’t work with me anymore. Talk about overreaction. Also, doesn’t he trust his girlfriend? Geez…

I found it very funny that he found a lonely geek like me a “threat” if you will. Well, for his credit, he hadn’t met me. I don’t think we ever met. Oh well, here’s the poem that caused all this havoc…

Another note, the “majestic o’erhanging autumn trees” line was from the road my house was on in Belleville. I would drive down it every day, and there were these huge trees that spread over the road like a roof, that were absolutely gorgeous in the fall. *sigh* I miss that house. Lots of good memories… alas, tis gone into the murk of the past now…

Your bright beauty arrests my heart,
While your glorious curls ensnare my mind,
sweeping my thoughts into wild swirling flights of fancy.Your laugh inspires the soul
more than majestic o’erhanging autumn trees,
burning with the fruits of spring’s passion.

Truly there is no gem,
That fails to pale beside your tranquil eyes,
and no light that glows with more warmth
than your sweet smile.
