Emerald Eyes (1997)

I wrote this in about an hour on a lifeguarding shift at the YMCA. Don’t tell the Aquatics director. (Well, I haven’t worked there in 5 years so I doubt it would matter. There are lots of interesting stories from there, though.) I was paying attention to the pool, really. You know how slow these mornings can get.

Somebody’s niece or something was hanging around. She was quite nice to look at and inspired these words. You know, just random thoughts to practice the creative spheres of my brain!

Emerald Eyes

What a boon ’tis to the eyes
To hold such beauty in their sight.
Thy dark chestnut mane
Cascades about you,
Framing glittering emerald eyes,
Far more precious than any mere gem.
A simple smile, brighter than sunshine,
To banish the darkest of nights.
Such faerie beauty needs simply,
to capture the eyes with its bright song,
to enchant the heart.
