Response from Turner’s Office
I sent a quick e-mail to my MP’s office shortly after bill C-61 was introduced (along the same vein as my letter). Here’s the (canned) response I got from his aide, below the break. At least they’re recognizing that there is “some concern surrounding the bill’s proposals in regard to technological protection measures”, which is more than Prentice is willing to admit.
In a general update, Michael Geist reports on the growing opposition to this copyright bill from students, educators and librarians.
Dear *DancingSamurai*,
Thank you for your email of June 12th to hon. Garth Turner is regards to copyright reform.
On June 12th, Industry Minister Jim Prentice released bill C-61, An Act to Amend the Copyright Act. This bill has been delayed for months and we now have an opportunity to study the proposal.
Garth Turner and the Liberal Party believe that updating the Copyright Act to address rapidly changing technology is important, but any changes must strike the right balance between consumers and creators.
The complexities of this bill will require careful review to determine its long-term effect on Canadians. There is some concern surrounding the bill’s proposals in regard to technological protection measures. It is important that these changes do not take rights away from Canadians.
As this bill is debated in the House of Commons, we will need wide consultation with everyone – including consumers, artists, and businesses – to ensure that Parliament understands all the impacts the bill might have.
The Conservatives have failed to properly consult Canadians on this proposal.
Mr. Turner wants copyright reform that fosters innovation, protects fair use, and fairly compensates creators. Any legislation must not favour one group at the expense of another.
Once again, thank you for your email and allowing us the opportunity to address your concerns.
Sincerely,
Tim Rosenburgh
