Miscellanery
Well, I’m just starting my new rotation out in Cambridge. I figured the drive would be too far to do daily from my new place in Oakville, so I took up Mac-CARE’s offer of a funded residence here. I’ll likely be doing some more driving as every Wednesday I’m back for my clinic etc… but that’ll give me a chance to see my lovely wife… :)
Anyway, so here I am, with no distractions (like my new PS3, 52″ Sony TV, or my gaming desktop computer for my latest diversion, The Witcher) — so I’ll probably get more studying done.
Or, at least, catch up on my blogging. :)
So, without further ado, here’s a quick run-down of interesting links:

- PZ Says about what I have to say about the Conservatives’ latest bid to censor “amoral” art:
Conservative values don’t seem to have anything to do with personal standards, at least as they are expressed by politicians and the media. “You will not watch movies with graphic sex scenes” is not what I would consider a moral good. It’s the imposition of values on someone else, not yourself.
My MP, Garth Turner, also comments about this on his blog:
Mr. McVety, besides being against the portrayal of sex in art, is vehemently against homosexuals and believes they are deviant. He has grossly misrepresented sex education materials as pornography. He is dead set against abortion. He even orchestrated the nomination of a Conservative candidate in the last election, Rondo Thomas. He tried to overturn my own nomination. He says Stephen Harper is on his speed dial.
Now he will control what you watch.
Be very afraid.
- Oooh, and another reality check from PZ, about how researchers (funded by agribusiness) who figure that biofuels actually are more damaging than fossil fuels had their funding pulled:
Some people, even prominent, wealthy people, simply don’t understand the fundamental concept of basic research. The goal isn’t to get answers that make you feel good; it isn’t to find ways to rationalize continuing damaging practices; it isn’t even to pat you on the should and salve your delicate feelings. It is to find out the actual answer to a problem, no matter what it may be. Don’t fund research if you’re afraid of the truth.
Those two agriculture groups really ought to be ashamed of themselves. This is like getting together with your friends to play baseball, but threatening to take your ball home if they don’t let you win.
