Copyright News

Well, between Afghanistan, the budget, a possible election, etc, I’m not that surprised that the new copyright bill hasn’t been presented in parliament. There have been some developments on this front, though, namely a Business Coalition for Balanced Copyright forming with some big names (like Google) pushing for, well, Balanced Copyright. Howard Knopf points out related comments, also from Google (Bill Patry):

The intense, negative reaction of Canadian citizens to IIPA’s efforts is well-taken. Why any government would want to adopt approaches that have been admitted to be a dismal failure in the U.S. by the law’s own ardent author, and that are not required by the WIPO treaties is a mystery.
