A little more on Primus WiMAX
I’ve been pretty busy lately but due to some downtime of my main Internet provider for upgrades (TekSavvy – I love ‘em by the way, and ordinary people wouldn’t have noticed it since they’re kind enough to do their upgrades in the middle of the night — but I’m a night owl… :P ), plus my increasing boredom at some of our lectures, I’ve been playing around with the Primus WiMAX trial I mentioned before. And it seems Google has been doing a decent job, since another blog managed to find my little note out in cyberspace!
Anyway, I’m currently typing this in downtown Hamilton, where connectivity is actually much more stable, and speed ranges from 400-800 kbps, much closer to the advertised 1 Mbit.
The connectivity problems I mentioned earlier may be because of my location. A few weeks ago I received an e-mail from Primus stating that they would like to send an engineer out to meet me because of the poor reception in my apartment building. I’d love to help them out but I haven’t heard from them since indicating the same. So, the problems I mentioned may have been because I was in some sort of isolated dead zone in my building…
… unfortunately I get similar intermittent connectivity problems across the street on ground level. And I couldn’t connect at all from the Second Cup in Westdale last week (the point would be to avoid those exorbitant hotspot fees) or from my apartment last night. Again, I haven’t been using WiMAX enough to tell if those were temporary problems (bad enough) or permanent connection difficulties with their network.
I’ll have to try connecting again today from home… they also sent me a desktop WiMAX modem, since apparently they had complaints that the PCMCIA ones had disappointing performance, which I have not even had time to take out of the box…
(I guess the lesson to them is, they should have signed me up 3 years ago before I had a girlfriend/fiancee/soon to be wife! )

When I get my modem, I’ll be sure to let you know if I have the same issues.
Thanks for the info.
