War on Drugs marching north?

May 29, 2007 By: DancingSamurai Category: Links

An op-ed in the Edmonton Journal highlights that our US-friendly conservative government may be thinking about implementing a US-style war on drugs. The last paragraph pretty much sums things up:

If the Harper government believes that throwing more money into law enforcement and drug interdiction is the right model, it should do so only after explaining how it expects to succeed when all other similar efforts have shown no benefit and, in many cases, have resulted in considerable harm.

It should also not do so at the expense of those measures, including safe-injection sites that have been shown to work.

I could go on and on about how terrible an idea that is. The article does. Others, including those in law enforcement, have. So I’ll spare you my painful rendition (especially since I’m post call and fairly incoherent.)
