Highway speed — does it actually kill?

An interesting article that looks at what actually happened when speeding laws were changed. I’m not totally convinced by the statistics — as they point out, road accident death rates alone are poor indicators since there are too many variables to reach a cause and effect conclusion — but it makes for interesting thinking. And the one sentiment I do agree with:

The 55 mph speed inaugurated an era when limits became revenue enhancers – and the highway patrol turned into highwaymen, eroding public respect for and confidence in police forces.
