A well written post

January 01, 2007 By: DancingSamurai Category: Musings

PZ Myers‘ daughter Skatje has written a brilliantly concise essay on atheism, “Why I don’t believe in god”. There’s another one on abortion.

The (anti-)religious essay covers many of the same points explored by this Teaching Company course, Philosophy of Religion, which I have been listening to on my drive to work. Anyone interested in further detail and history should check it out (you can probably find it at your local library — or on a torrent site — if the $200 price tag seems excessive). And don’t misunderstand me — the course is, unlike these bloggers, quite neutral on religion. It just looks at reasoned (and not so reasoned) arguments for and against.

I’m consistently impressed by the quality of writing coming out of today’s youth. Compare that to my silly ramblings laden with poor grammar and lazy vocabulary. I am trying to take more care in writing my posts; it’s an effort to shake off years of habits formed by IM-culture. Time constraints also… bah, just more excuses. I will now be quiet and go for results!

I do, however, miss the old days of FidoNet and BBSes, where we would have discussions on these and other topics in a very adult way. I was about Skatje’s age at the time — I still remember debating about NAFTA on some discussion forums with a businessman. I don’t think he realized he was exchanging words with a 15-year old!
