Dawkins on Religion
Richard Dawkins has been in the news quite a bit lately. For those of you who don’t know, he’s a British biologist who’s a pretty outspoken atheist — militantly so. He’s recently released a book entitled “The God Delusion”.
The title pretty much gives the subject matter away; and he’s had quite a number of interviews to talk about his book, for example on the BBC (link accompanied by some interesting commentary) and on the Colbert show. There is actually a documentary he made for the BBC entitled “Root of all Evil?” that further explores his position. Whether you agree with him or not, I highly recommend that documentary as a frightening look into the minds of several fundamentalist religous figures he interviews. (PS There are a number of other great “must see” documentaries available here.)
Now, a more acomplished blogger would probably write some sort of commentary on the above. I’d really really like to, but I must say I’m somewhat embarassed — I haven’t written a coherent essay or opinion piece in ages and am a bit shy about starting by talking about such a controversial topic, which has been discussed to death for, oh, the last 3000 years or so (at least), by people far more eloquent than I could ever be.
If I were to write something, though, it would include something about Occam’s Razor.
But I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions — for now. :)
