New theme & reviving my old entries

September 30, 2006 By: DancingSamurai Category: Site News

Well, today I finally got some time to work on this site… so I re-vamped the theme. The background pic I got from here. I’ll have to e-mail the creator of said pic and make sure it’s OK I use it… I hope so because I really like the way it looks! What would be even cooler is if I could figure out how to put the pic into black & white but leave Kenshin’s eyes glowing amber… now THAT would be cool.

I had to make it really pale or the foreground text would have been a little difficult to discern.

I also started to bring over some of my old blog entries to the new layout. I had almost 400 entries on my old blog, can you believe that? I may import them all manually. There is at least one script to import from Movable Type but I’d still need to review each entry for a) links and b) personally identifying information. Not to mention, really stupid posts. The silly ones can stay, but the stupid ones are being quietly removed… ;) Especially since I’m “growing up” now and am becoming more of a public figure in the community… or something like that. :)

The biggest problem of course is the WHOIS database. You know, the one that publishes your personal details for the world to see in exchange for your domain name? Technically it’s illegal to provide false information when you register a domain… although nobody really checks. If there’s a dispute though you’ll have trouble proving it’s really you who owns the thing. *sigh*.

Luckily it looks like CIRA has updated their WHOIS policy to hide this information — althought heir practice does not yet reflect their policy. When this masking will be implemented is anyone’s guess.

Now, for dot-ca domain names registered to individuals, the new WHOIS states that:

The following information is available to the public through the WHOIS service:

(a) domain names;
(b) Individual Registrants Registrars name;
(c) the expiration date of each Domain Name Registration of an Individual Registrant;
(d) the registration date of each Domain Name Registration;
(e) the last changed date of each Domain Name Registration;
(f) whether the Domain Name Registration has been suspended or is in the process of being transferred; and
(g) the Internet Protocol Number of the primary name server and secondary name server(s) and, if applicable, the tertiary, quaternary, quinary, and senary name servers for each domain name registration; and
(h) the corresponding names of those name servers.

Therefore it will no longer be possible to obtain the following using a traditional WHOIS query for dot-ca domain names registered to individuals:

  • The name, address, phone number, email, and fax number (if provided) of the Administrative Contact and Technical Contact;
  • The Registrants CIRA assigned Registrant number;
  • The name of the Registrant;
  • Each domain name registration and the CIRA assigned domain number for each domain name registration held by the Registrant;
  • The description field which the Registrant or the Registrants Registrar filled out during the registration process describing the
    Registrant or the Registrants business.

Anyway, something to keep an eye on. Well, off to bed, I have to drive to Toronto tomorrow!

Stuff still to do:

  • Finish Drupal config & migrate old site — In progress
  • Set up category icons for news stories like my old site had
  • Install HORDE or citadel or other collaboration-type thingie
  • Apache2 with SSL
  • RRDtool / MRTG system monitoring & my router
  • chrootkit / logwatch / etc. for increased security
  • squid transparent proxy
  • DDNS for both my domains on my DD-WRT firmware-d linksys router.
  • move my p2p apps to my server
