Domestic Violence and Illegal Immigration

July 23, 2006 By: DancingSamurai Category: Links

At the clinic I’m at, there’s at least one study running on the rather large problem with domestic violence that is present in our society. Since it is reported in the literature to be so prevalent, they’re studying the effects (if any) of routine screening of women who present for ANY visit to the office.

Of course, the difficulties just start there. Once you’ve identified a woman who is at risk / victim of domestic abuse, what exactly do you do? I certainly don’t know all the resources that are available (if any) to help them. And in the states, even the legal system doesn’t want to deal with it. Check out this LA Times Article; just because the victim was an illegal immigrant, the judge told her to get out of his courtroom. Wow. That’s helpful.

I don’t really have much to add except to stand with my mouth agape, incredulous.

(I probably would have something to add, but my brain is all mushy from a weekend of lying in the sun and eating barbequed food… :D)
