VoIP Goodness

May 16, 2006 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

Well, my VoIP setup is getting more and more complete every day. I get a ‘real world’ phone number from CallCentric with unlimited incoming calls for $6/month. They also have very excellent rates for calling out to Canada/US (1.98 cents US per minute); if I made a lot of calls I could always get their $20/month unlimited plan (of course at that point something like Vonage or Primus might actually be worth it).

They don’t provide voicemail, but until I get my Asterix PBX set up they DO provide free forwarding to other SIP accounts. And Gizmo DOES have free voicemail.

The latest addition to my setup is a Grandstream HT-386, to hook up a regular phone to my LAN. No more softphone (yay, now I can continue playing Oblivion when someone calls me… *g*).

The only hitch is that callcentric inbound calls seem to lock up my grandstream box. I’m waiting to hear back from their support people on that one (who are very helpful and quick, by the way). This isn’t a big problem as I’m forwarding all my calls to Gizmo (which works just fine), but is still somewhat annoying.

Also, the call display doesn’t seem to work right on the phone. I’ll have to get a more modern (instead of this $10 piece of junk) phone to test it out with.

UPDATE: The lock-up glitch was caused by bad firmware. The new beta firmware solved the problem. It now works perfectly!!
