Work and Happenings

June 15, 2003 By: DancingSamurai Category: My Life

Well, I’ve been working here in Thunder Bay for a week and haven’t filled all of you avid readers (yeah, both of you… lol…) in on what exactly I’m doing, so I’ll do that now… and also yap on about the assortment of things I’ve been up to.

I don’t know though, I haven’t been feeling like writing here in a while… the novelty wearing off? *shrug* … then again, I have an inbox full of people to reply to… and I’m not really inthe mood to write to them either, so I’m probably just in a boring un-social mood. *g*… I did however just finish a 3 page letter to Sam… have to mail it to her in Churchill. Hope it gets there this year. :)

So, anyway, work: It’s at St. Joseph’s Care Group here in Thunder Bay. St. Joe’s is a rehab hospital, so it’s a little different from the acute care stuff I’ve been doing before… so far I’ve done a lot of shadowing their different programs. Mostly it’s rehab so I got to see what OTs and PTs and speech pathologists do… which is pretty interesting, but definately not something I”d personally want to do.

The purpose of all that shadowing was to familiarize myself with the different programs in the hospital (I still have some more to do next week), since I’ll be working on tring to better integrate telehealth (especially the videoconferencing) into them – review existing guidelines and develop new ones, try and make the technology more accessible for staff, etc. It would be a good idea to use it more, since this is the main rehab centre for northwestern ontario, some people have to drive 10-12 hours just to get here… so for things like assessments and follow-ups, or even some classes/lectures that are easy enough to do over videophone it saves a lot of travel time for the patients.

As part of that, it seems I’m to develop a training package on the equipment for staff, since there’s basically only one person here that knows how to use it all! Which makes things difficult.

Overally, it looks like an interesting assignment, I don’t know how much of that I can get done in 8 weeks but we’ll see!!

In other news, I’ve been hanging out with the other students downstairs. They’re super nice… one of them left yesterday morning. It turns out whe knows Samantha, from Hart House Singers… and I heard her sing in their spring concert! Small world, eh?

Unfortunately, it seems as if all the girls downstairs are spoken for or not terribly interested, but that’s ok, they’re friendly and I’m learning to cook from them and getting rides to places. :) That more than makes up for things, hehe… well, not really, but that’s what I tell myself. :D

I’ve convinced them to come out to dance with me tonight! That’ll be fun, I hope they have some decent music… I heard they let people brin gtheir own CDs so I’m doing that, that way we’ll at least get a couple good lindy songs… :)

Adrienne and Anita are a hard sell though, i had to promise to go to aerobics with them on Monday for them to come out. Won’t that be interesting…. :) Well, it’s all women there, right?? … or something.

Anyway I’m uploading some pics from yesterday, I went out walking in the Marina park with Rakka, a nursing student I met at the hospital. She has this great big dog that dragged us around… but having dogs are a great way to meet other dogs’ owners… and some of them are nice. :)

I got a major sunburn though. That’s ok, it’s not major enough to bother me… it’ll be a nice tan soon enough!!
