A couple movies

May 18, 2003 By: DancingSamurai Category: Arts

Well, to take a break from these awful, awful, Shah readings… some comments on a couple movies I saw over the last few days:

Swing: This movie I saw at the Royal (one of the Festival Theatres… you know, indie/foreign movies?), with Mai Ling. Yay! It’s in French, about a little boy’s vacation, that he spends hanging out with tomboy Swing and learning Manouche guitar… it’s got lots and lots of beutiful nature shots, some good emotion, Gypsy culture, and of course, great music! Those guitars… ahh… one day, maybe I’ll play half as well… :)

The Matrix Reloaded: Pretty good, actually! The effects of course were stunningly beautiful; the philosophy was… well a little contrived, they just talk about stuff but don’t really say much. Maybe I’ll just have to watch it again. And they put a new twist on the whole thing. (More below, SPOILER WARNING)

So, apparently, from what I gather, the world of Zion is just another Matrix. It’s not real. Clues? Neo has his powers (probably the biggest one). Agent Smith is able to reprogram people in the “real” world (could be explained by programming ‘biological computer’ of the brain or something, the topic of many sci-fi and even conspiracy theory-type modern day thrillers – but more in keeping is simply Smith taking over the body through code).

Also, Neo got a SPOON in the real world. Remember, “there is no spoon”. Right?

Apparently I’m supposed to look up that French guy for some interesting historical/mythological facts that might richen my understanding of the film. Hah, probably after my B&B exam… :)

Anyway, enough of this, back to studying…
