Breastfeeding = porn?
My, it’s early. Or late. Uhh…? I guess staying up all night to finish my DOCH essay wasn’t particularily helpful for my sleep cycles. Oh well. I got my essay done, and managed to follow along in class, too. Let me tell you I was kindof tired and had some fun conversations. Well, *I* thought they were fun. I guess I was feeling less inhibited and much relieved to have my essay done. I wasn’t drunk, though I may have acted somewhat like it. :)
When I got home I crashed and slept, but woke up at 1:30 AM since I couldn’t sleep any more.
I’ve been doing miscellaneous catchup things but now I think I’ll take another quick nap before doing my PBL homework and some studying. I have no school until 1 pm, so I should be OK.
First, though, I want to put forth a poorly thought out, incoherent rant about the pitiful state of America (and by extension, Canada…). This article discussed on K5 brought up my ire…
To save you the trouble of reading that long article (and any comments on K5), basically what happened is a family of Peruvian immigrants took brought in some photos to be developed at a local shop; the clerk called the police because some of the pictures contained nude shots of their 1 and 4-year old children, including a breastfeeding shot. And the police in turn, considered these pictures child pornography, raided the family’s 1-room residence to search for more porn, laid heavy charges on them, and had whatever equivalent of Children’s Aid take the kids away from the parents.
Now, although charges have been dropped (after putting the family through the humiliation and inconvenience of the above search and legal proceedings), the state has yet to return the children to their parents.
It angers me greatly to hear of such an obscene miscarriage of justice. Who gave the government the power to tear apart families over a photograph of a toddler breastfeeding? *shakes head*
I guess I don’t really have too much to say. Well, I have lots, but thoughts are just sputtering around uselessly in my head, I think I need more sleep. I should point out a somewhat tangentially related article that came up in a comment on K5… well, actually, not really that related. Gerber using the WTO and its muscle to defeat local legislation in Guatemala that tried to encourage breast feeding (which is much healthier than formula… but Gerber wouldn’t make any money from breast feeding.) It’s appropriate because it’s about health. Yay. And all those terms from DOCH are just sliding into place… you know, the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion… Healthy Public Policy… and all that. You know, stuff I should be worried about because it’s important for my future career.
And it falls into my bigger gripes about runaway corporate power and the WTO. But… that’s a story for another day.
So uh… good morning? ;)
